Regenerative Energy

Regenerative Fuel Cell

In a regenerative system a fuel cell and an electrolyzer are combined to both produce and consume stored hydrogen, and optionally oxygen. When a renewable source, such as wind or solar, is connected to the electrolyzer the input power is used to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen is then stored within the system and consumed in the fuel cell to produce power when the renewable source is unavailable. This combined process can also be advantageous for traditional grid energy storage, stand-alone remote applications, and High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) aircraft.

Regenerative PEM Fuel Cell Process

Regenerative Fuel Cells
When combining electrolysis and fuel cell modes within the same system the PEM process becomes regenerative. Adding renewable power input to the electrolysis process makes the entire system sustainable.

Regenerative Energy

Advanced Regenerative Fuel Cell Technology for Long-Duration Energy Storage

Infinity’s regenerative fuel cell systems combine Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells and PEM electrolyzers into a single, integrated energy storage solution. By producing hydrogen when excess electricity is available and converting that hydrogen back into electricity when power is needed, regenerative fuel cells provide reliable, long-duration energy storage for aerospace, defense, renewable energy, and remote applications.

Why Regenerative Fuel Cells?

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind generate clean electricity, but their output varies with weather and time of day. Regenerative fuel cells store surplus renewable energy as hydrogen through electrolysis and convert it back into electricity using a fuel cell when renewable power is unavailable. This closed-loop process enables dependable, zero-emission energy storage without the limitations of conventional battery systems.

Engineered for Mission-Critical Performance

Infinity designs regenerative fuel cell systems that integrate hydrogen production, energy storage, and power generation into a single architecture. Our systems are engineered for applications where long-duration energy storage, high efficiency, and operational reliability are essential, including space exploration, mobile microgrids, remote infrastructure, and defense operations.

Closed-Loop Energy Storage

Renewable Energy When You Need It

During periods of excess renewable power, Infinity’s PEM electrolyzers produce hydrogen from water for storage. When electricity is needed, the stored hydrogen is supplied to a PEM fuel cell to generate clean electrical power. This regenerative cycle enables renewable energy to be stored for extended periods and used on demand, supporting reliable power in environments where continuous energy availability is critical.
